US NHANES 2011-2012

  • Mean blood pressure was 107/59 mmHg
  • 5.6 million (12%) had elevated SBP (≥ 120 mmHg)
  • 0.9 million (2%) had elevated DBP (≥ 80 mmHg)

Comparing ages 8-10 to ages 17-19 years
  • Elevated SBP increased from 2% to 25%
  • Elevated DBP increased from 1% to 3%

Among 10.9 million adolescents ages 17-19 years
  • One in four had elevated SBP
  • Risk for elevated SBP increased to one in three for males and non-Hispanic Blacks

Blood pressure increases with age in children and adolescents.  Elevated SBP is common in older adolescents, particularly in males and non-Hispanic blacks.
